The new Secondary English Language Arts (SELA) program for Cycle One is first and foremost a literacy program. It is centered in the connection between the learner’s world and the social purposes that are served by the language, discourse and texts that our students will encounter in the world and focuses on the development of fluent readers and writers of spoken, written and media texts.

The student’s writing, production of media texts and other language-based activities are closely connected to his/her interests and world of friends, family, school and community.

The three (3) competencies of the SELA program for Cycle One work together:

  • Competency 1: Uses Language/talk to communicate and to learn
  • Competency 2: Reads & listens to text
  • Competency 3: Produces spoken, written and media work

The cross curricular competencies such as extending their creative and critical judgment, using information and effective work methods, and working with others (Approaches to learning – MYP Area of Interaction) as well as other Areas of Interaction (Broad Areas of Learning), will provide topics and issues that invite interdisciplinary study and exploration, including media literacy, citizenship and community life and environmental, health and social awareness.

Le programme de base de français enriche s’adresse aux étudiants qui ont terminé dans un programme d’immersion au primaire. Ce programme vise le développement d’habiletés plus complexes, en matière d’interaction, tant à l’oral qu’a l’écrit.

La programme de base de français, langue seconde, permet à l’élève qui à suivi un cours de base régulier au primaire de continuer son apprentissage de la langue.

C’est par la compréhension et la production de textes oraux, écrits ou visuels portant sur différents sujets, notamment sur les domaines généraux de formation, que l’élève développe sa connaissance et sa maîtrise du français.

Compétences à développer:

  • Interagir en français en se familiarisant avec le monde francophone.
  • Lire des textes varies
  • Produire des textes varies


Ces compétences forment une étroite relation avec “Communiquer de façon appropriée” et  sollicitent l’ensemble des compétences transversales d’ordre intellectuel.

Diverses stratégies sont utilisées pour atteindre ces compétences:

  • Stratégies d’interaction
  • Stratégies de compréhension
  • Stratégies de production

Spanish as a third language is a component of the MYP Français Enrichi course (4/2 per cycle). The objectives of Spanish are to give students the basic structures to develop their understanding and production of written and oral language. The students will be given practice situations where their usage will gradually develop into habit. The study of grammar will also be continued. The knowledge of important aspect of the culture will be further developed.
